ISBN 978-0-415-69270-0. This is a very timely and useful book. It comes at a time of growing and urgent concern about old-age income support in the midst of a rapid demographic transition in East and Southeast Asia. Accompanied by rapid economic growth and urbanization, demographic transition is one of the region’s biggest structural shifts in the median and long term. As the region becomes greyer, old-age income support becomes one of the biggest social and economic challenges facing these countries in the twenty-first century. Traditionally, Asians have relied on family networks to provide old-age income support. However, social and economic changes in the past decades have led to the weakening of family-based old-age support. This calls for a bigger role played by formal pension systems. A well- functioning and robust pension system is expected to be a central pillar of any adequate and sustainable old-age income support system for countries in the region.
