Rather than focusing on the US or the UK, as many existing textbooks do, the book takes the “international perspective” in its title seriously: the examples and case studies in the text come from a wide variety of countries, including many developing ones too. Indeed, its coverage of usually neglected topics such as state enterprises and privatization, fiscal policy’s role in alleviating poverty and administrative complexity and costs, increases the appeal of this book over existing texts for readers interested in the public economics of less-developed countries. More generally, the overall coverage of topics is radically different from the usual. The introductory chapter points to the standard market failures to explain government inter- vention in modern economies, but it also adds macroeconomic stabilization, a role that has hitherto been considered within the scope of macro- rather than public economics.
