This book provides a comprehensive assessment of potential socioeconomic and political gains the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) may provide, if completed. It is published at a critical time when the momentum toward realizing the full potential of the ASEAN single market has been plagued by a number of hiccups. For example, the emerging pro- tectionist pressure arising in the aftermath of the global financial meltdown has raised questions about the successful accomplishment of the AEC by 2015. The qualitative and quantitative analysis presented in this book asserts that all ASEAN countries stand to gain significantly from the AEC in terms of inclusive and sustainable growth. This is on top of the political and social stability that they would achieve. The boldest efforts by ASEAN member states must be supported by all and they must be committed to meet the 2015 deadline.
