The Forum was conducted with the cosponsorship of the Institute of southeast Asian Studies in Singapore on April 11, 2008. The theme of the conference, The Politics of Knowledge, is explored from several different perspectives. The Forum had the themes of knowledge as a driver of economic growth, protecting knowledge, controlling knowledge and sharing knowledge. The Forum also discussed how Asian nations can better understand the politics of knowledge. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong set the scene by emphasizing the importance of knowledge and innovation in explaining economic success. Following this introduction, Danny Quah explores the theme of knowledge as a driver of economic growth. Quah demonstrates that Asia was able to overcome the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, emerging stronger, more dynamic, and better able to sustain rapid growth based on good governance, openness to trade, new knowledge and technology.
