INTRODUCTION AND EDITORIAL OVERVIEW

INTRODUCTION AND EDITORIAL OVERVIEW The Singapore Economic Review, Vol. 59, No. 1 (2014) 1402001 (3 pages) © World Scientific Publishing Company DOI: 10.1142/S0217590814020019 Published 10 February 2014 In the era of globalization and liberalization, the world is becoming more dynamic as well as fragile. One of the most striking changes reflecting the dynamics is the co-existence of global economic growth and prevailing income inequality. The dynamism in a globalized world economy raised crucial and interesting questions to us: Can globalization and liberalization promote economic growth? Is income inequality a result of high economic growth? Is inequality good or bad for economic growth? Is growth good or bad for inequality? This special issue is about to answer these questions by presenting country studies for the relationship between economic growth and inequality. It also provides facts and understandings that are useful to approach these important ques- tions in today’s world economy. This special issue contains eight case studies for various countries. The first paper studies OECD countries focusing on policies for growth and income equalization. It shows that in many OECD countries, income inequality has increased in past decades: Top earners have captured a large share of the overall income gains, while others have captured http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png The Singapore Economic Review World Scientific Publishing Company
